The project “Mest op Maat – Dünger nach Maß – ” (Fertilizer made to measure) worked along the entire value chain from raw manure, through direct use as fertilizer or energy substrate, to its processing into fertilizers and input substrates for biogas plants in German and Dutch regions with high livestock-refinement intensity.
At the beginning of the project, the occurrence, surplus and transport of animal excrements and nutrient loads were presented clearly. With the help of joint cross-border excursions and expert workshops, the project investigated and evaluated innovative processing technologies and utilisation concepts.
The main focus was on identifying the interests and needs of the customer in order to be able to offer products that are optimised to meet their requirements. The main focus of the work in the project was the investigation of existing and new technologies and concepts for manure and fermentation residue recycling. This was achieved through testing on both laboratory and practical scale for the processing of cattle and pig manure and fermentation residues. Through the tests, optimisation potentials for existing technologies were raised, new technologies were further developed and transferred into technically mature concepts. In the end, the project was realised in pilot plants on a practical scale. In addition to the plants for processing, the project also considered the logistics and application technologies. With the further development of NIRS-controlled and precisely demand-based fertilization, surpluses in fertilization can be effectively avoided.
Through technical innovations, the project has contributed to treating and processing liquid manure where it is produced, thus significantly reducing the transport of liquid manure across the border. Furthermore, the realisation of successful treatment concepts and the implementation of optimisation potentials in already existing technologies were made possible. The next aim is to manufacture marketable products that can be used as a substitute for mineral fertilizers in arable farming regions.
